The South African winelands town of Franschhoek, home to La Motte and Leopard’s Leap, recently celebrated Bastille Day to celebrate its French heritage and a record number of people travelled here to sample the region’s great wines and culinary delights.
A good part of the success of the two-day Bastille Festival was the use of social media by estates, restaurants, hotels and guest houses, and retailers to promote the event.
“We would like to thank all our members who tapped into our new social media campaign this year by supporting Franschhoek Wine Valley with tweeting, re-tweeting, blogging and generally spreading the news via Facebook and other social media networks.” the local tourism body wrote in an email to its members.
“The number of positive tweets and amount of re-tweets on twitter was overwhelming. A combination of PR, advertising and social media initiatives together with the sum of efforts by all members has assisted us in increasing our reach across many channels this year.”
Just goes to show the increasing importance of social media as a marketing channel.
