I am very happy to see the growing opposition to the nonsensical proposal by the state-owned African Exploration Mining and Finance Corporation to start prospecting on wine farms in the Stellenbosch area.
The proposal has been widely condemned on several grounds including that many of the minerals listed in the proposal are not found in the region and that it would do irreparable harm to wine tourism and conservation efforts in the region.
Sue Birch, CEO of Wines of South Africa, speaking for most in the wine industry, condemned the prospecting plan as “preposterous” and told the Sunday Times would be a setback for the image of the country’s wine overseas.
