I have just come across a new way of rating South African wine which is designed to deliver a single quality rating based on weighted results from reputable local and/or international competitions.
Calling itself the South African Wine Rating Index, the rating system’s website said “The purpose of this Wine Rating Index is to take South African wine quality ratings to a new level, considering more than just a mere one-off tasting result, through the introduction of an uniquely-designed index system through which local and overseas consumers of SA wines can discover and compare the real quality standing of any particular SA wine.”
I am even happier to report that based on this new system, La Motte’s Pierneef Shiraz Viognier wine achieved that second highest score of all with a rating of 97.2.
A score of over 96 indicates an excellent wine of distinction that is exceptionally outstanding. The SA Wine index described a wine scoring 96+ as a “superlative top class masterpiece”.
