Most of us have someone we admire. Some we respect, others we adore. It can be someone as close as a family member or a public figure you have never met. It can be a person of historical importance, a philosopher or inventor long gone, a savvy business person or a sport star!
And for me, although I have much respect and admiration for many others, there is one great South African that has always set a standard and example that is truly exceptional.
A “legend in his own time” and an inspiration for everyone who believes that quality and hard work are non-negotiable.
The most successful international golfer of all time, Player is also well-known for his dedication to the principles of excellence as well as an impeccable set of values. (Read his biography.)
Although often quoted for saying: “The harder I practice the luckier I get”, research suggests it not to be his original quote
. Nevertheless, these words are a true reflection of his character and commitment – as is his 10 commandments
: valuable guidelines to success, whether in life or in business.
I have had the privilege to meet him before and again this week at the US Masters
. Again he managed to inspire only with his presence and character.
So much more than a sport star, an architect of amazing golf courses and a breeder of race horses. The Black Knight not only invests in the South African youth through The Player Foundation, but he serves as an example and inspiration to all South Africans.
