“We’re so nature-deprived that even footage of wilderness lifts our spirits”, says
We all know that being in nature can help heal, sooth and restore and generally have a positive effect on our wellbeing. (Read more) In 2020, Covid-19 added more stress to our already demanding schedules and worries about financial security and personal safety – suddenly we were all under threat of a pandemic bringing much uncertainty and fear.
We all know that being in nature can make us relax and feel less anxious. A better state of mental wellbeing also affects us physically with reduced blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension and a lower production of stress hormones. We all might feel that we lack some calm and balance in our lives and being in nature is one of the most effective and cost-effective ways to get that back. I love cycling for the exercise I get and enjoy golf amongst other reasons for the social game it is, but a very welcome side effect is that I get to spend time in nature. South Africans are fortunate to generally have easy access to nature – often of spectacular beauty. While being in nature is a good choice for your daily exercise or getting your peace and quiet, it is also a wonderful option when it comes to choosing a holiday – especially in the time of Covid!
Whether you choose game reserves, rural breakaways, beach holidays or visiting a mountain resort, all these options offer plenty of fresh air and the opportunity to stay away from densely populated environments. While the Cape Winelands are mainly popular for their experiences around wine, food and culture, there are many activities that take you outdoors! We all enjoy mountain and vineyard views over a glass of wine, the exceptional local produce on our plates, perhaps even a lovely fynbos bouquet in our house, but there are plenty of opportunities for a closer acquaintance with the natural beauty of the Boland.
Some of the wonderful ways to get out include hiking or cycling in the mountains or walking through fabulous gardens, but there are much more! From horse riding to zip lining and e-bikes! Summer is here and perhaps now is the perfect time to explore the natural beauty and adventure opportunities of the Cape Winelands!
