The Canadians are noticing the inroads that South African wines are making into the UK market at the expense of French wines. Geoff Last recently wrote in the Calgary Herald that:

“England has traditionally been a robust market for French wines, so it came as a surprise to learn that South African wine sales recently surpassed French wine sales — at least in the supermarket realm.

“Although South Africa is not exactly a newcomer to the wine trade, the country tends to fall into that ‘always a bridesmaid, never a bride’ category. Perhaps this is the year that it gets to throw the bouquet.”
